Wan and lugubrious, The Captive represents another atmospheric, beautifully filmed misfire from director Atom Egoyan.

The Captive (2014) | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Stephen Romei The Australian Egoyan skilfully brings these story-lines together as the film builds to its disconcerting conclusion. Rated: 3/5 Dec 19, 2014 Full Review The Captive (2014) | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Tirdad Derakhshani Philadelphia Inquirer For all its problems, The Captive does try to hit the themes that have obsessed Egoyan for three decades: desire, death, memory, and time. Rated: 1.5/4 Dec 19, 2014 Full Review The Captive (2014) | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Robert Abele Los Angeles Times Becomes baroque and ludicrous as the Hitchcockian scenario loses its psychological bearings in a web of trashy plot twists and self-conscious jumps in time. Dec 18, 2014 Full Review The Captive (2014) | Rotten Tomatoes (4) Diego Batlle Otroscines.com Despite significant resources and a well-known cast, this accumulation of perversions, script whims, and ridiculous situations result in a monstrosity: cold, artificial, clumsy, manipulative, and, ultimately, hollow and banal. Rated: 2/5 Feb 2, 2021 Full Review The Captive (2014) | Rotten Tomatoes (6) Alex Heeney Seventh Row [Atom] Egoyan frames each shot so precisely so that we're always aware of what we're not seeing, creating suspense as things are revealed. Henrik M Much more exciting than the poor ratings. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/18/24 Full Review Audience Member Dark subject, some lame moments, some clever ones. Well acted Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/12/24 Full Review Audience Member This film is about a girl who gets abducted and is placed into a human trafficking ring and the lengths that her father and the police go to to get her back from her captors. Overall due to the non linear structure, Reynold's performance, and the emotional impact throughout, this movie is like a more indie version of the highly acclaimed Prisoners and despite the unsatisfying ending, an enjoyable experience that had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. Rated 4/5 Stars • Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/01/24 Full Review Jerod S It's unfortunate the way this film was put together, because the angst of Reynolds and Enos losing their daughter and knowing that she was still somehow alive, was lost in the crafting. Durand was creepy and could've been used more. Rated 2.5/5 Stars • Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 08/25/23 Full Review Mario C Two words: movie sucked.
